First and foremost...
I believe that EVERYONE should own a foam roller!
If you train with me, you may already know how I feel about this. :)
In a nutshell, the foam roller allows you to perform self myofascial release
(SMR), which is akin to deep tissue massage.
By performing Self-Myofascial
Release (SMR) techniques on a simple piece of foam, you can improve flexibility,
function, performance, and reduce injuries. In a nutshell, you can use your
own body weight to roll on the round foam roll, massaging away restrictions to normal soft-tissue extensibility.
BENEFITS OF SELF-MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
- Correct muscle imbalances
- Increase joint range
of motion
- Decrease muscle soreness
& relieve joint stress
- Increase extensibility
of musculo-tendinous junctions
- Increase neuromuscular
efficiency
Maintain normal functional muscle

General Guidelines
- Hold each position 1-2 minutes on
each side (when applicable).
- If pain occurs, stop rolling and REST
for 30-45 seconds.
ü Continuing to roll when pain is present activates the muscle spindles, causing increased tightness
and pain.
ü Resting 30-45 seconds will stimulate the Golgi Tendon and autogenically inhibit the muscle spindles;
reducing muscular tension and improving the regulation of fascial receptors.
- Keep core engaged, which provides stability to the
lumbo-pelvic-hip complex during rolling.
- You can perform the SMFR Program 1-2
x daily.

do personally love this "gizmo"? I use it almost daily as a means of staying flexible, reducing post-workout soreness,
and staying injury-free. It promotes BALANCE amongst the muscles of the body, and healthy muscle tissue means better
progress, regardless of your fitness goals!
